It has been over a year since the war began in Ukraine in February of 2022. Francisco Carrillo, a Chilean photographer and filmmaker based in Ukraine created this editorial inspired in Cyberpunk and a dystopian world, in collaboration with the fashion stylist Yuliya Postushna. This session took place in the city of Kiev amidst the sound of air-raid sirens announcing Russian bombing daily. Anastasia Durkot, a Ukrainian actress, is the protagonist of this production, representing rebellion and the fight for freedom in a violent and chaotic context.
Anastasia, ¿How is it like to live in Ukraine today?
I love Ukraine very much, there's everything to be happy. But waking up with the sound of explosions is terrifying. The worst part is that people are already used to it, and I still can't believe that all of this is happening.
Where were you on the night of February 24, 2022?
I arrived home from work at 3 in the morning, I had just fallen asleep when suddenly everything started. I was very scared, I didn't know what to do or where to go. At first, I went to the town of Irpin and later I thought about what to do next.
"To be honest, my whole life has been turned upside down, many things have changed, and right now I have no idea what to do next. It's hard for me to see so much sorrow."
What was your routine at the beginning of the war?
At first, I tried to get used to it, I looked for a job, read, and sat at home every day.
Have you continued working as an actress in despite of the current context?
No, I would love to because I can't live without creativity, but many projects have closed for me and I have gone to the Czech Republic for the moment, because my parents were very worried about me.
"Ukraine was and will be a strong and independent country. I hope that all the corruption that existed can disappear and that people can be happy".
What do you think has to occur to put an end to this conflict and what would be the first thing that you would do when that happened?
It's necessary for the Russian people to finally understand what is really happening, and that Putin finally dies!. I'm sorry to say it, but so many lives have been ruined by this bastard!. After the war, I would go back home immediately!, Ukraine is a great country.
There are some countries that have little by little forgotten what is happening in Ukraine. ¿Which message would you give them?
Now all countries are helping Ukraine and we are very grateful for that. I want to apologize if we had any bad behavior in your country in the past, but we all want to go back home now.
What things have you learned in the last year?
I have learned to value every moment and the people around me. To pursue what I want now because it might be too late after.
What do you value most from the Ukrainian people?
I appreciate their honesty, quality, and support. The love for what they do.
How do you juggle on your social networks the war content with entertainment content for your followers?
I only create appropriate content. Sometimes it's necessary to post something fun to help people distract a bit.
How do you imagine the new Ukraine?
Ukraine was and will be a strong and independent country. I hope that all the corruption that existed can disappear and that people can be happy.
What are your wishes for this 2023?
I want peace!. Of course, I have plans for 2023 regarding to my development and dreams, but victory is the most important thing!.
