From the pier of Punta Hermosa, 30 km from the capital of Peru, Lima, "Blossom" became one of the first international collaborations for Hybris. The chilean model Simona Maass was passing through Peru working in the midst of the Pandemic when she, along with René Funk and Marte Díaz, decided to made this editorial. The atmosphere that is achieved with natural light or the light of the same locations contributes to an intimate and everyday story. The bet was to develop naturalistic scenes, not overloaded or pretentious, added to a result without excessive retouching that shows the beauty of natural skin and its "imperfections". Having the Ocean in the place where you live is a true fortune, hardly swimsuits and bikinis can't be part of day-to-day.
Simona, how was the experience of working with Marte and René? & What do you think is essential to feel comfortable in a session of this style?
The experience was super good, I already knew Mars and we have a very good relationship, with René at first I was a bit nervous because he was a new photographer for me, but I think everything turned out quite well. I believe that the most important thing is to feel confident with the people you will work with, and before the session talk about what is going to be about and get your doubts or the things you want to be able to generate a harmonious and trustworthy mood.
"A photograph that becomes unforgettable for me, is when I see the result and see everything that is behind that day, the team, the desire, and see that I achieved exactly what I wanted, that my expectations have been accomplished or see that I could to get better".
How is your personal process to pose or perform in front of the camera? & What would you rescue from this session compared to other more traditional ones?
My process is completely from experience, and to gain confidence in myself, to know that I have strived to improve every day and to feel satisfied with each session. This one in particular took me completely out of my “comfort” zone because I'm generally the “youthful” so I rescued that it was a challenge for me and it made me really want to do something different from what I'm used to.
In these times of Pandemic, what is it like to be constantly traveling for work?
At the beginning of the pandemic, I had to be in Peru when everything was decreed, the border closures, the curfew, the quarantine all hahaha and I could not return to Chile. Finally I had to return in a humanitarian plane without masks without nothing, because there was NOTHING, after a year, I returned to Peru in pandemic and it was calmer, due to the “habit” of living in this situation, quarantines, curfew… etc…. So I think you can, but you have to be patient with work trips, even if you have a return or outward date, it can always change against your will, and I think I learned that you don't have to have so many expectations with trips to how it was before.
The female body has always been under the critical gaze of society. Why do you think that a natural state of acceptance or common agreement cannot be reached?
Because it has cost a lot to lower the standards, of the typical tall and skinny model.
"I think that I Simona, I do not know if it would be a topic as such, I like more to talk about the experiences of others, perhaps modeling, how one grows, the confidence that you gain, how one feels, having different points of views, helping models who are just starting out, that not everything is superficial as people think, because in the end we are also human beings".
